Julian S. Lim was born in 1959, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Although
he is professionally employed in the e-Marketing Communications
field with an MBA, his special love is promoting Korean Martial
Arts. GM Julian S. Lim started training in TaeKwonDo in 1970 under
Lee Byong Moo and Nam Tae Hee, (two legendary Korean Masters)
as well as Ooi Ah Ching and Andy Yuen. He achieved his first black
belt in 1975, after having interrupted his grading timetable for
2 years to participate in inter-state college championships (black
belts were not allowed to compete at the time). GM Julian S. Lim
co-captained his college to 2 consecutive Grand Championship wins.
He was also twice joint captain for the victorious (Selangor)
Malaysian Open (Team) Championship as well as being the Malaysian
Open 1984 Destruction Champion (Team).
GM Lim continued
his martial art studies in England from 1976 to 1982 where he
also practiced HapKiDo. He successfully sat for his 5th Dan (ITF
style TaeKwonDo) in 1984, and subsequently re-sat under the ChungDoKwan
system (WTF TaeKwonDo), his original or 'mother' style, in 1986.
He was awarded his 7th Dan for TaeKwonDo by the Korea ChungDoKwan
Association in 1998, and was further successful in achieving both
his 8th Dan and GrandMaster status for HapKiDo by the Korea HKD
Association (KHA) in the 2001.
Furthermore,
he was tested for, and awarded his 8th Dan and KJN of HKD SMK
by the DaeHan KiDoHae (not WKF). Similiarly, he is ranked 7th
Dan and also awarded KJN of HKD SMK by the DaeHan HapKiDo Hyup
Hae or KHF.
GM Lim's success
in instructing is borne out by his record of helping in the preparation
of successful international teams: 3 teams (2 Malaysian and 1
New Zealand) collectively netting a total metal tally of 2 World
Golds plus 4 Gold, 5 Silver and 2 Bronze medals at Regional Levels.
Medal tally at National levels total over 30 Gold and Silvers.
He has also organized many charity functions using the Korean
Martial Arts; various National and International Championships,
and an eventual 52 program TV martial art series. Civilian national
service contributions in 1984 and 1985 saw him appointed as Senior
Instructor the Royal Malaysian Para-military (PPH) Police. The
unit was routinely used on anti-communist insurgents 'search and
destroy' sweeps in dense jungle areas.
He was appointed
the official representative (Regional Director) of the World KiDo
Federation (WKF) for the South East Asia-Pacific region in 1991
via the KiDoHae, and is also the Malaysian representative for
the KHA, KKH and the KHF.
As recognition
for his efforts in promoting TaeKwonDo (as well as being appointed
both as an International Referee and International Master Instructor),
GM Julian S. Lim was honored by a Presidential Sports Award and
a Letter of Citation from the WTF in 1989, with a second WTF Certificate
of Citation in 1994.
GM Lim was
also a recipient of Letters of Citation from both GrandMaster
HWANG, Duk Kyu (Korea HapKiDo Association) and GrandMaster SEO,
In Sun (KiDoHae). He is currently Head or HweJangNim of the perceived
orginial school of HapKiDo, SungMooKwan, certified as such by
both the KHF and the KKH.
Lieutenant
Colonel (LTC, acting) Julian served as a special military consultant
to the Royal Malaysian Armed Forces Unarmed Combat Institute,
where he had aggressively assisted in developing a new state-of-the
art self-defense system (Close Quarter Combat, HKD TTS or Tindakan
Tempur Senjata HapKiDo) from 1993 to 1994. Training was also extended
on special request to various individual U.S. Army Special Forces
(SF) and Special Operationsunits (Rangers) as well as to various
Airborne units (82nd, 101st and JFKSWC). He held the acting rank
(honorary) of Lieutenant Colonel before retiring. LTC (Rtd) Lim
is also a certified Associate Member of the US (Army SOF) 75th
Ranger Regiment, American Airborne and US (Army) Airborne Pathfinder
Associations. He is also recognized as a Master Specialist in
Military Close Quarter Combat by the KHF. No other person in the
